COVID ramping up in county

The number of COVID-19 cases is increasing in Greene County, indicating community-wide spread. Greene County public health director Becky Wolf reported a total of 28 confirmed cases as of Sunday morning, after the total held at 13 for several weeks.

The 28 cases puts Greene County 52nd of Iowa’s 99 counties in cases per capita, with an incidence rate of 312 per 100,000 in population. COVID-19 is most prevalent in Buena Vista County, where there are 1,667 cases, computing to 8,388 cases per 100,000 in population.

“It’s important to remember that once you’re exposed, the coronavirus incubates in your body for the next 14 days, when you may begin to spread the infection to others, whether you have symptoms or not,” Wolf said. “We are trying to slow the spread of this rampant virus, but we need everyone’s help.”

Wolf declined to give any information about specific parts of the county or employers where the new cases have been diagnosed. She also did not share whether any cases have required hospitalization.

Free cloth masks are available in adult and child sizes for any county resident who needs one through the Cover Greene County initiative. Persons who need masks can call Greene County public health at 515-386-3228 to arrange for pick-up or delivery.

Local public health nurses are staffing the Greene County COVID Concern Hotline seven days a week from 8 am to 8 pm. The Hotline number is 515-386-0564.
